  • In February 2020, we set out a plan to shift our business strategy in the United States to maximize the connection between our clients and our world-class international network.
  • Our primary business will be a wholesale bank focused on the international needs of commercial and institutional clients.
  • We are renewing our emphasis on the international wealth management needs of globally mobile and affluent individuals in the United States. HSBC is uniquely positioned to capture more of this US$5 trillion market.
  • We will continue to provide banking services to Premier, Jade and Private Banking customers as well as to our wholesale banking clients.
  • HSBC is strengthening and focusing its US organization to better serve our target customers and nurture strong, long-term customer relationships.
  • We aim to be the leading international bank in the United States, and are focused on what we do best – connecting our customers to a world of opportunity and bringing cross-border business and investment to the United States.
  • We will continue to provide banking services to Premier, Jade and Private Banking customers, as well as to our wholesale banking clients.

  • Premier, Jade and Private Banking clients who will remain with HSBC have transitioned to one of the new 22 HSBC Bank Wealth Centers.
  • Other retail banking and wealth customers have transitioned to Citizens or Cathay Bank.
    • We thank those customers for their business.
    • We have worked closely with Citizens and Cathay Bank to make the transition as seamless as possible.
  • Citizens and Cathay Bank have sent welcome information to transitioning customers, and will continue to communicate about the transition.

  • Insurance and annuity relationships are not impacted by the transactions.
  • Additionally, the transactions have no impact on the investment relationships for our qualifying Premier customers, our Jade customers or our Private Banking customers.
  • For our customers who fall outside the above propositions, the impact on investment relationships differs depending upon the geographic region
  • For East Coast and online customers, certain brokerage accounts that are included in the agreement with Citizens transferred to Citizens Securities on or about February 18, 2022.
    • Note: A small number of customers may have received updates following notice of the transition to Citizens if there was an operational issue or other circumstance that would keep Citizens from accepting the account or a particular securities position within the account. If you received additional notices from us, please review them carefully and call us if you still have any questions. Our HSBC Wealth Services Desk contact information is noted below.
    • Investments that are not held in your brokerage account, such as annuities or 529 College Savings plans, were not included in the agreement to transfer certain accounts to Citizens. HSBC Securities remains your broker and information regarding changes to services for these accounts was provided in a letter dated February 9, 2022. The changes described will be effective March 14, 2022. Feel free to call us if there are any questions. Our HSBC Wealth Services Desk contact information is noted below.
  • For West Coast customers, banking relationships transitioned to Cathay Bank but investment and insurance relationships did not as they were not part of the agreement. Brokerage accounts and other investments remain with HSBC Securities, and insurance and annuity relationships are not impacted
    • If you have a linked bank deposit account with HSBC Bank that you previously used for settling transactions in your HSBC Securities brokerage account, you will have received a separate letter from HSBC Securities dated December 23, 2021 about the need to contact us and update your settlement instructions. Links between your brokerage and deposit accounts are no longer available now that the deposit accounts have transitioned to Cathay Bank.
  • For questions about brokerage accounts that have converted to Citizens, the Citizens Resource Center offers chat support the most up-to-date information about the transition, answers to frequently asked questions, when to expect new account details and more.

  • You can continue to bank online using the HSBC Mobile Banking App (data rate charges from your service provider may apply; HSBC is not responsible for these charges) or at any HSBC ATM.
  • We’ve made some exciting enhancements to help you make your day to day banking better.
  • We’ve increased transaction limits for our Premier, Jade and Private Bank clients for:
    • Mobile Check Deposit up to $25,000 daily and $50,000 monthly
    • ATM withdrawal and Point of Sale up to $5,000 and $15,000 respectively
  • We expanded our ATM network to include 43,000 additional surcharge-free ATMs in the US and 55,000+ worldwide.

  • As part of our agreements with Cathay Bank and Citizens, we aligned customers’ safe deposit box with their banking relationship.
  • Customers who are affected by this re-alignment received a letter explaining that they needed to visit their HSBC branch and retrieve the contents of their safe deposit boxes to retrieve the contents within 60 days of our first notice. If the contents were not retrieved, the box was opened in the presence of a Notary Public and an HSBC Bank officer, and the contents inventoried, removed, and safely stored for two years.
  • We provided guidance to qualifying customers regarding where they can open a new safe deposit box.
  • If a customer did not receive a letter, no action is required. We look forward to continuing to provide these customers with safe deposit box services at the current location.
  • Customers with questions about the status of their safe deposit boxes can visit their HSBC branch, or chat with us 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week on the HSBC Mobile Banking App (data rate charges from your service provider may apply; HSBC Bank USA, N.A. is not responsible for these charges) or at www.us.hsbc.com/chatwithus.
    • HSBC remains focused and committed to our Commercial Banking customers including the Business Banking segment (businesses with an annual turnover of more than US$5 million). Our agreements with Cathay Bank and Citizens have no impact on Commercial Banking accounts.
    • Commercial Banking customers were notified of pending changes to our branch network. They can contact their Relationship Manager for more information.
    • Accounts of Retail Business Banking customers (small businesses with annual sales of US$5 million and under) were transitioned to Cathay Bank on February 4 and Citizens on February 18.
    • HSBC, Citizens and Cathay Bank have been in touch with these small business customers with information about the transition.
    • Should you have immediate questions, please reach out to your HSBC Relationship Manager.
    • Night Drop services at HSBC locations that have transitioned to Cathay Bank and Citizens or have closed are no longer available.
    • Customers should destroy any keys for Night Drops at these locations. 
    • HSBC Commercial Banking customers who utilized Night Drop have been notified and can contact their Relationship Manager or branch team to learn about steps to take to continue Night Drops.
    • Small business customers who are part of the agreement with Cathay Bank or Citizens can contact Cathay Bank or Citizens to inquire about this service moving forward.
    • Insurance and annuity relationships are not impacted by the transactions.
    • Additionally, the transactions have no impact on the investment relationships for our qualifying Premier customers, our Jade customers or our Private Banking customers.
    • For our customers who fall outside the above propositions, the impact on investment relationships differs depending upon the geographic region

    Customers with accounts that have transitioned to Citizens

    • On February 18, 2022, one or more of your accounts with HSBC became Citizens accounts.
    • Personal account types that transferred to Citizens include deposit accounts (checking, savings, certificate of deposit), personal credit cards, certain mortgages and Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC). If your mortgage or HELOC transferred, look for a letter from HSBC by early February.
    • Business banking relationships also transferred to Citizens.
    • If you have accounts transitioned to Citizens and live outside the United States, HSBC sent an email about some differences in access and servicing as a Citizens customer. The description of those service differences is based upon information provided to us by Citizens. So for questions about these changes as well as details about services available through Citizens, please contact Citizens directly: visit Citizens Information for International Customers, or call 888-999-4158 Monday through Friday 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. ET, and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. ET.

    • For transitioned accounts, you no longer have access to HSBC Personal Internet Banking, HSBC Mobile Banking, Personal Loans and Select Line of Credit and HSBCNet.
      • If only some of your accounts were transferred, those accounts have been moved from HSBC.
    • Your access to Citizens Online and Mobile Banking access began February 22. Credit Card Online Banking access began February 20 for consumers and February 22 for businesses
    • Following are online banking transactions and information that transitioned to Citizens:
      • Bill Pay scheduled with a payment date after February 18
      • Transfers set up on Online Banking between your U.S. accounts, as long as both accounts are being transferred to Citizens
      • Saved Bill Pay payee information
    • Following are online banking transactions that were not transitioned to Citizens are:
      • Future dated/recurring wire payments and beneficiary information
      • Future dated one-time payment for Personal Loans with a payment date after February 17
      • Future dated Global Transfers, Bank-to-Bank transfers or Real Time Payments

    • Your HSBC ATM/debit card and transitioned credit cards are deactivated.
    • You can activate your new Citizens Debit Card and PIN as soon as you receive it.
    • Citizens ATM/debit cards and credit cards can be used now.
    • Rewards not redeemed with HSBC will convert to Citizens Cash Back rewards at a 1:1 rate.
    • Following are transactions and information that transitioned to Citizens:
      • From February 21, 2022, to April 19, 2022, HSBC will forward any presented checks to Citizens so they can post to your new account. Begin using Citizens checks on February 19.
      • ACH Direct Deposits will be transferred to your new account until May 19. Don’t forget to update account information with your depositor.
      • Recurring transactions from merchants with your account information on file (ACH Debits) until April 19
      • Recurring automatic payments (EZ-Pay) for Personal Loan, Select Line of Credit, Business Loan or Revolving Line of Credit accounts.
      • Wires received to your transferred HSBC account until April 19
    • Following are transactions and information that did not transition to Citizens:
      • One-time future dated payments set up through the branch or contact center with a payment date after February 17 to personal Credit Cards, Select Line of Credit or Personal Loan accounts.
      • Recurring automatic payments (EZ-Pay) for personal Credit Cards
      • Recurring automatic payments for HSBC Mortgage or Home Equity Line of Credit
      • Links to cash transfer apps such as Zelle or Venmo
      • IRS tax forms, so consider downloading and saving tax documents prior to transitioning to Citizens.
    • In preparation for a smooth transition of one or more of your accounts to Citizens, we changed your account statement format from a combined statement to individual statements for each account. This means that if you received a combined statement, you will now receive individual statements for all of your accounts, and that we will be able to share statements for December 2021 and January 2022 with Citizens
    • Even though your accounts have transitioned, you can contact us for support related to statements on HSBC accounts before transfer. Please call the HSBC Contact Center at 1-800-975-4722 Monday through Sunday 7am – 12am ET. If you’re calling from outside the US or Canada, please call 1-716-841-7212.
    • Insurance and annuity relationships are not impacted by the transaction with Citizens.
    • For East Coast and online customers, certain brokerage accounts that are included in the agreement with Citizens transferred to Citizens Securities on or about February 18, 2022.

    Customers with accounts that have transitioned to Cathay Bank

    • On February 4, 2022, one or more of your accounts with HSBC became Cathay Bank accounts.
    • Personal account types that transferred to Cathay Bank include deposit accounts (checking, savings, certificate of deposit), and certain mortgages. All other personal account types will remain with HSBC. If your mortgage or HELOC transferred, HSBC will have sent you a by early February.
    • Business account types that transferred include deposit accounts, loans and lines of credit. Business Credit Cards will remain with HSBC.
    • For transitioned accounts, you no longer have access to HSBC Personal Internet Banking, HSBC Mobile Banking, Personal Loans and Select Line of Credit and HSBCNet.
      • If only some of your accounts were transferred, those accounts have been moved from HSBC.
    • Your access to Cathay Bank online banking began on February 7.
    • Following are online banking transactions and information that transitioned to Cathay Bank:   
      • Bill Pay and ACH scheduled with a payment date after February 7 
      • Saved wire and ACH beneficiary information
    • Following are online banking transactions that were not transitioned to Citizens are:

    • You can activate your new Cathay Bank ATM/debit card now.

      • Starting February 7. HSBC will forward any checks presented to Cathay Bank until May 5, 2022. Begin using Cathay Bank checks on February 7.
      • ACH Direct Deposits will be transferred to your new account until May 5. Don’t forget to update account information with your depositor.
      • Reoccurring merchant auto-pay ACH debits until May 5
      • Recurring automatic payments (EZ-Pay) for Personal Loan, Select Line of Credit, Business Loan or Revolving Line of Credit accounts
      • Wires received to your transferred HSBC account until April 7
    • Following are transactions and information that did not transition to Citizens:
      • One-time future dated payments to Personal Loan. Select Line of Credit, Business Loan or Business Revolving Line of Credit accounts set up through the branch or contact center
      • Recurring automatic payments for personal HSBC credit cards
      • Recurring automatic payments for HSBC Mortgage or Home Equity Line of Credit
      • Links to cash transfer apps such as Zelle or Venmo
      • IRS tax forms, so consider downloading and saving tax documents prior to transitioning to Cathay Bank
    • In preparation for a smooth transition of one or more of your accounts to Cathay Bank, we changed your account statement format from a combined statement to individual statements for each account. This means that if you received a combined statement, you will now receive individual statements for all of your accounts, and that we will be able to share statements for December 2021 and January 2022 with Citizens
    • Even though your accounts have transitioned, you can contact us for support related to statements on HSBC accounts before transfer. Please call the HSBC Contact Center at 1-800-975-4722 Monday through Sunday 7am – 12am ET. If you’re calling from outside the US or Canada, please call 1-716-841-7212.
    • Insurance and annuity relationships are not impacted by the transaction with Cathay Bank.
    • For our customers who fall outside the above propositions, the impact on investment relationships differs depending upon the geographic region
    • For West Coast customers, banking relationships transitioned to Cathay Bank but investment and insurance relationships did not as they were not part of the agreement. Brokerage accounts and other investments will remain with HSBC Securities, and insurance and annuity relationships are not impacted
      • If you have a linked bank deposit account with HSBC Bank that you previously used for settling transactions in your HSBC Securities brokerage account, you will have received a separate letter from HSBC Securities dated December 23, 2021 about the need to contact us and update your settlement instructions. Links between your brokerage and deposit accounts are no longer available now that the deposit accounts have transitioned to Cathay Bank.
