CEO Michael Roberts’ Response to Buffalo Mass Shooting

Colleagues –

I am deeply saddened by the heinous mass shooting that took place at a grocery store in Buffalo this weekend. Located in a predominantly Black neighborhood in the heart of the city, this store is an important resource and thriving hub of activity for the families of this great community. Along with the rest of the country, I mourn the innocent lives lost as a result of another senseless act of violence motivated by racism and hatred.

HSBC’s roots in Buffalo run deep and the region is home to the largest population of US colleagues outside of New York City. I’m grateful to report that all of our colleagues based in the Buffalo area have been confirmed safe. To assist the community, we are donating $100,000 to provide immediate fresh food and groceries and other much needed support to those most impacted.

For colleagues who want to help, we recommend when you make personal donations, you use the US Employee Matching Gift Program and read this recent article on how to give responsibly. Shortly, the Volunteer Tool will include opportunities for our people to volunteer and support those impacted.

The impact of tragic events on our mental well-being cannot be overstated. For anyone who needs support, we’re providing counseling services through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP). You can take advantage of these services by visiting the EAP website.

I’d also encourage all of you to reach out to your colleagues and teammates in the Buffalo area this week to check in and offer your support.

Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and friends.

Michael
