HSBC Appoints Mark Schuermann to Lead US Public Affairs

(NEW YORK) – HSBC USA announced today that Mark Schuermann has joined the bank as US Head of Public Affairs.

Based in Washington, DC, Schuermann will lead the bank’s public policy activities and government relations in the United States and will be responsible for advocating on behalf of HSBC with US policy makers and elected officials. Schuermann will report to Sherard Cowper-Coles, Group Head of Group Public Affairs, and Mark Steffensen, General Counsel for HSBC USA.

“We are thrilled to have Mark join our team and leverage his experience to engage the regulatory community, Congress, and the administration,” said Steffensen.

“I’m honored to join HSBC and lead our public affairs team in representing the bank to policy makers,” said Schuermann. “HSBC plays such an important role in helping clients in the Americas and around the globe, and I look forward to telling that story.”

Schuermann joins HSBC from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), where he was Head of Federal Government and International Affairs. Previously, he led public affairs for the Americas at Nomura, where he helped establish its Washington, DC office in 2010. He also spent 16 years in both chambers of Congress, addressing issues impacting the financial services sector, the federal budget, trade and education policy.
