Reflections on current events
The US leadership team and I are appalled at the recent displays of racism, violence and hatred against the Black/African American communities in Minneapolis and across the country. On behalf of all of you, I want to categorically denounce discrimination and prejudice in any form as it does not reflect the values of our country and our company.
As a firm, we exist to connect communities. The makeup of our customers, employees and where we do business is inherently diverse and sewn into the fabric and DNA of HSBC over the last 150 years. That said, strong communities must be willing to have uncomfortable conversations and it starts right here with us. We can only imagine the pain and injustice felt by our friends in Black/African American communities and sadly, recent events are part of a broader and systemic issue in our country.
Let’s use these horrible circumstances as an opportunity to lead by example. It’s not acceptable to be silent and wish for it to go away. We must continue to play our parts by championing equality and inclusion so that we can be a better model for our loved ones and our communities. For me, it means ensuring that my daughters experience a world that’s more inclusive. It is our responsibility, collectively and individually, to be better, to do better.
I encourage all of you to do your part to create a more equal, just and inclusive community in our country and around the world.
